Fourth Annual Public Speaking Forum for

Highschool Homeschoolers

Date:  March 26

Time: 7:00 PM

Place:  Grace Presbyterian Church

Similar to last year, the purpose of this event is to provide an opportunity for highschool homeschoolers to practice public speaking.  A yearly speech is a requirement for highschool students working on a PHAA diploma.  In addition, any homeschooled students in grades 7 and 8 are welcome to participate.

Each speaker will be introduced by a fellow student prior to his presentation.  Students are allowed 15 minutes in which to make their speeches.  A question and answer period follows each speech during which the audience asks questions of the speaker.

Speeches may vary rhetorically in tone.  Some may be a rousing expression of opinion, while others may be presentation of an academic topic.

Requirements for students who wish to participate:

1.     Email me by March 1st of your interest.

2.     Begin preparing your speech on a topic of interest to you.  Note cards and visual aids will be permitted.  Speeches should not be read.

3.     Email me the full title of your presentation by March 19th .

4.     Email me by March 19th a paragraph giving biographic info about yourself which ends in the reason this topic was of interest to you.  Limit the length to what can be read in 30 seconds to a minute.

My responsibilities

1.     I will compile a program for the event.

2.     I will distribute biographic info so that each student can do an introduction for a fellow student.

On the evening of the event

1.     Arrive by 6:30 to receive the biographic info for the person you are introducing and to have time to go over it.

2.     Come with your prepared and practiced speech.

VALENTINE'S DAY COSTUME PARTY
and VALENTINE EXHCANGE
Feb. 14 from 1:00-3:30
Park Forest Baptist Church

for any and all homeschoolers (you don't have to be involved with SFEA)
NOTE: All students under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent, either their own or someone else's. This party is not an offer of free babysitting for the afternooon. If your child is over the age of 10 and you have even the slightest concern about any behavioral issues, please atttend the party with them. Thanks!

Cost: $2 donation per student ($1 will go to Park Forest for renting the facility, $1 will go towards supplies for the party) We'll have donation boxes out front that you can stuff your dollars into.
Also, please bring a snack or drink to contribute (snack time is from 3:00-3:30)

Come dressed as a character from a book. Bring the book with you so that we can play a guessing game, matching the characters with their books. We will have games and activities planned according to age groups. The themes of the activities will somehow relate to words, books or literature. (We want to be able to write the party in the log book, right?!) We will try our best to send out another email closer to the time with more specific description of the activities.

VALENTINE EXCHANGE: This is voluntary. Students who would like to participate must sign up ahead of time (deadline is Feb. 6). There will be three exchange groups: ages 7 and under, ages 8-10, and 11 and up. (If your child is on the edge of one of these groups and would like to switch to another one because all of their friends are in it, that's fine with us.) After we collect all the names, everyone in each group will receive a list of all the names in their group (a week ahead of time). You bring a valentine for each person in your group. There will be a sign up list at Park Forest Baptist, near our mailbox unit. If you can't make it over to Park Forest Baptist, just email the names and ages of your students to mail@sfea.info. You will receive your lists of names either late in the day on Feb. 6, or by email on Feb. 7.
For those participating in the Valentine Exchange, bring a valentine box of some kind that is clearly labeled with both your first and last name. You can do the traditional "decorate a shoe box" or you can use a basket or some other idea. Make sure it is not too small, though! Some valentine givers in the past have included a treat or craft item of some kind, which takes up more space than just a paper valentine does.

VOLUNTEERS???
Yes, we'll need some! Specifically, we need moms to help out in the following capacties:

1) Valentine Excange: a couple moms at each table helping to get the boxes organized in some kind of alphabetical fashion, and keeping an eye out for any kids who are having trouble finding the correct boxes to put their valentines in. This job would only run from 1:00 to 1:45 at the latest. Once all the boxes are filled, they will sit on the table and wait until the end of the party, then the kids will pick up their boxes on their way out.

2) Food: A couple of moms to man the kitchen and make sure the snacks, napkins, drinks and stuff are set out in an orderly fashion. ALso, be in charge of clean-up, which doesn't necessarily mean doing it all yourself, just making sure it gets done and we don't leave things a mess for the church. This job would involve being in the kitchen from 1:00-1:30, then agiain from 3:00-3:45.

3) Activity helpers: we have a few games in mind that need some adult staff to hold baskets, collect things, hand out things, etc.

If you would like to volunteer for any of these things, or if you have other ideas or contributions to make, email Ellen McHenry at ellenmchenry@hotmail.com, or talk to Ellen on Tuesday.

Passing along this press release that the pastor at Port Matilda Baptist Church forwarded. Richard Hurd is new to our area and an internationally known author. He is available to come and talk to school groups, homeschooling groups, club & organization functions, etc. We highly recommend him as a speaker, he is very good with kids.  Would you please pass along his info to any interested groups?

Press Release for Early 2007.

Richard Hurd is a Pennsylvanian author. Rich is a 1983 graduate of Bangor High School, Bangor PA. He is also a graduate of Baptist Bible College, Clarks Summit PA. While he has traveled extensively, Rich currently resides in Port Matilda, PA.

His publisher, Authorhouse, is an international corporation that publishes and sells a variety of books all over the world. Rich’s books are enjoying popularity in Tokyo, London, and in several major US cities.

The Mythosian Chronicles Series is a conflict between ancient mythology and futuristic technology. Some reviewers have categorized it as “Harry Potter meets Star Trek” while others refer to it as “Chronicles of Narnia meets Star Wars.” Since the series is a combination of science fiction and science fantasy, it has been hard to classify at times.

While the series was originally written with the “college crowd” being the target audience, Junior and Senior high school students have also enjoyed the series immensely. Rich has received fan mail from all over the world, and from all age groups and walks of life. Because of fan mail and critiques, Rich is currently working on a second edition series to make the books more appealing to a wider audience.

Rich has had book signings in New York City NY, Detroit MI, Portland OR, and many other smaller cities across the USA. As a Pennsylvanian Author, he has had many events at several public schools and town libraries in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has also appeared at county fairs and other public venues in several states.

Rich’s first book, the compilation novel, the 734 page “Mythosian Chronicles” was first published in 2004. This novel comprises condensed versions of his first five books. The second compilation novel, “Mythosian Chronicles II” comprises condensed versions of books six through eight, and was published in 2005. In 2006, Rich released the first full version story in the series “Lord Wizard Chronicles”. “Cat Chronicles”, the second full version story in the series is due to be released by March of 2007. Rich plans a total of 13 books.

For more information, and previews of the published books, you may visit the official publisher website at www.authorhouse.com.
