Testing through Pennsylvania Homeschoolers
PA Homeschoolers will again be offering fall
testing in Castanea (little town right next to Lock Haven) on Sat., Oct 29. Any
homeschooled child in grades 3rd through 12th can participate. The TerraNova
2nd Edition Survey Test will be given and fulfills the testing requirement for
3rd, 5th, and 8th grade as required in the homeschooling law. Fall tests are
not harder since children take the test that is usually given at the end of the
previous grade. Yearly testing can also be done so you can follow your child's
progress from year to year.
Testing
begins at
9:30 am, with registration from 9:00 - 9:30.
Reading, language arts, and Math are done between 9:30 and noon, break from noon
until 12:45 for a bag lunch and play time, and, if the parent chooses, may have
the student stay for the science and social studies portion of the test from
12:45 - 1:45 (this portion is not required by law).
You may
preregister online at
www.pahomeschoolers.com and go to their online store. Preregistrations must
be received by October 6. If you choose to register at the door, the cost is
$30, preregistration is $25.
The test
is given at the
Big Woods Bible Church in Castanea, PA.
Directions can be found at the Pennsylvania Homeschoolers website.
You can
help your child to prepare for this test by ordering Scoring High on the
TerraNova test preparation materials. Order level 2 for 3rd grade, 4 for 5th
grade, 7 for 8th grade. PA Homeschoolers carry these at their online store and
they will also buy back the teachers' manuals for $6 at the test site.
PA
Homeschoolers are also testing in
Altoona on
Nov 8 and Warren Co on Oct 10. These are the only other test sites within
central PA.

COGNITIVE SCREENINGS FOR LEARNING CHALLENGE
Sometimes parents hit academic “roadblocks,” and can’t figure out why their child isn’t progressing academically. Has this been happening with your homeschooled child?
Do these difficulties presently, or will they in the future, have a negative impact on: your child’s self esteem, academic advancement, parent-child relationships, vocational opportunities, friendships, attitude, etc? The major causes of early academic challenges are frequently traced to deficient underlying cognitive skills. Testing may be required to sort out these problems.
Harmonic Progressions administers a series of cognitive screenings to help parents determine their child’s learning strengths and weaknesses. Through a series of individual tests, and then in comparison with your child’s achievement levels in different subject areas, we can determine a cause and effect relationship between the underlying mental skills required and the achievement area(s) affected.
For questions about a cognitive screening, and to discuss assistance in sorting out some of the specific corrective measures that can be taken, call: Suzanne Wolfe at Harmonic Progressions ~ 237-8003. (Suzanne also teaches for the Solid Foundation Educational Association)
